Know Who I Am: The Many Names of GOD

Upon our acceptance of Jesus Christ in our lives and as we grow as Christians, we become aware of the many names of God. Today, we will focus on the name: “Jehovah Jireh”

Knowing Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide

In Genesis chapter 22, in the story of Abraham’s faithfulness and obedience to God, we discover that God put his faith to the test by requiring him to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering.

This story was so empowering, as Abraham did not hesitate or question God, but out of his faith and obedience, he set out to sacrifice his son on the mount in the place of Moriah. This was a true testament to Abraham’s relationship with God and his understanding and knowledge of God’s character. Despite the nature of what God was requiring of him, which we all would identify as difficult, Abraham had faith that what God requested of him was an opportunity for God to manifest Himself as Jehovah Jireh: Our Provider. We see this in Abraham’s responses in Genesis 22:5 & 8.

5Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we’ll come back to you.”

7Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, “My father.” And he replied, “Here I am, my son.” Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? ”

8Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Then the two of them walked on together.

We can sense the confidence and faith in Abraham’s responses. He told the other men who made the journey with himself and Isaac, “The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we’ll come back to you.” Although God told Abraham to sacrifice his own son, he stated that “we’ll” come back. Isaac, his son also asked, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” In answering Isaac, Abraham was sure that God would “provide” the lamb for the burnt offering.

Abraham did as God asked; built an altar and set Isaac on it to be slain and sacrificed. As he went forth with his knife to kill Isaac, the angel of the Lord called to him out of heaven and ordered him not to harm Isaac. The angel told Abraham that he had proven his fear of God by not withholding his son (his only son) from Him. Abraham then looked up and behind him was a ram caught in a bush. He retrieved the ram and placed in on the altar in place of his son for the burnt offering. In Genesis 22:14, Abraham called this place Jehovah-Jireh.

God’s love for us is so great, that He Himself provided us His son, Jesus Christ, as the final sacrificial lamb. He will always provide for us, as long as we have a relationship with Him, by accepting Jesus Christ in our hearts and remain obedient to His will through reverencing and fearing Him. Due to Abraham’s obedience and reverence of God, the angel of the Lord told him that he would be blessed and that his seed would be multiplied as the stars of the heaven and as the sand that is upon the seashore; his seed shall possess the gate of his enemies and in his seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed (Gen 22:16-18). Our faith and obedience to God is how we show are fear and reverence to Him; with that we will reap the benefits and blessings from God and come to personally know Him as Jehovah Jireh.

Knowing Jehovah Nissi: The Lord Our Banner

Exodus 17:15 (CSB)

15And Moses built an altar and named it, “The LORD Is My Banner.”

In Exodus chapter 17, during the Amalekites’ attack on the Israelites, Moses was on a hilltop with Aaron and Hur in order to intercede for the people of Israel during the battle. It was here and during this time, that God manifested himself as Jehovah Nissi. As Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed in the battle and if he put his hand down, Amalek prevailed. Moses’ arms began to grow weak but Aaron and Hur were there in place to lift and support Moses’ arms until the sun went down. Just as Aaron and Hur were there for Moses to assist him in the task he performed during the battle, He will also place others in our lives to “hold up our arms”; supporting us while carrying out God’s will.

We also see in Judges 6:14, how God appointed Gideon to save Israel from the Midianites and promised to be with him as they prevailed against the enemy (Midianites). As we look at both stories of Moses and Gideon, we can see the correlation of man’s weakness empowered by God’s strength, hence, Jehovah Nissi. Gideon’s Army had been reduced to 300 men, based on the Lord’s direction, despite the larger Army of thousands they were about to face. This was a clear indicator of God’s power, promise and a perfect example of God operating as Jehovah Nissi. Let us allow God to reign as Jehvoah Nissi in our lives. He is the Lord our banner who will fight for us and will always give victory to those who trust and believe in Him. Therefore, don’t be discouraged and don’t give up. In your weaknesses, God will make you strong, so that the plan for you life will prevail, even when it may seem impossible.

Knowing Jehovah Rophe (Rapha, Rophi): The Lord Our Healer

The Lord our God gives us many benefits. One of those is His healing power. God does not only have the power to heal us from physical infirmities, but also spiritual infirmities.

Psalm 103:1-3 (CSB)

1Of David. My soul, bless the LORD, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2My soul, bless the LORD, and do not forget all his benefits.

3He forgives all your iniquity; he heals all your diseases

Looking at and understanding the Lord’s will to heal and desire to make us all whole, is captured throughout several stories in the bible. We see God revealing Himself to the Israelites as JEHOVAH ROPHE in Exodus 15:26. We also see His condition in which healing would be sustained.

He said, “If you will carefully obey the LORD your God, do what is right in his sight, pay attention to his commands, and keep all his statutes, I will not inflict any illnesses on you that I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”

In John 9:1-3 (CSB), we see that God will also allow affliction, as it was with the man who was born blind in this story, so that His glory may be revealed. In verse 3, Jesus stated, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him.” Don’t be discouraged if you are faced with affliction, as God still has a plan for your life through this, to ultimately reveal His glory through your affliction. Though affliction may weigh heavy on the heart, we must know that God’s plan is perfect, and you as a vessel are being used that His glory may be revealed to you and through you for others.

In Luke 13:10-16 (CSB), Jesus was teaching in the Synagogue on the Sabbath day, and a woman was present who was disabled due to a spirit of infirmity and bound by satan for 18 years. She was unable to stand up straight and was hunched over. Jesus saw the woman and called out to her stating, “Woman, you are free of your disability.” He then laid hands on her and instantly, she was restored and glorified God. This story shows us that illness and disability is not only physical but can be a result of spiritual bondage, manifested physically. Either way, the truth is, God is able to heal us!

There is no doubt that everyone will face or know someone who stands in the need of healing. We must know the source of which our healing comes. There is only one name, one that is powerful enough to bring restoration, to the spirit and body. His name is JEHOVAH ROPHE. We encourage you to seek the Lord for whatever you may need and allow Him to heal you in every way.

Whether physical pains, heavy hearts, or sickness due to self-affliction through disobedience to God, He is able to heal you! Will you let Him in and walk in freedom today?

3And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

Upon our acceptance of Jesus Christ in our lives and as we grow as Christians, we become aware of the many names of God. Today, we will focus on the name: “Jehovah”

In Exodus 6:3, God spoke to Moses about the promises of freedom that was in store for the Israelites from under control of the Egyptians. God explained that when he appeared unto Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that they did not know Him as Jehovah or The Lord. He proceeded to tell Moses of the things he would do for the Israelites as “The Lord” in Exodus 6:6-8.

6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:

7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.

As we can see from these scriptures, God desired the Israelites to know Him more that just being God, but to identify Him as “Jehovah”, recognizing Him as Lord. The scope of God’s relationship with the Israelites was changing, with Him reclaiming Lordship to rule and reign over them, disarming the hold of Pharaoh’s authority and rule. As a benefit of them accepting God’s Lordship and believing in Him, they would inherit the promises that God gave to their forefathers. (Exodus 6:8)

In Hebrew, Lord stands for the personal name of God, also known as Yahweh. In order to know God and who He is intimately, we must first accept Him and His ways in our hearts; acknowledging Him as Jehovah, our Lord.

We all have the opportunity to inherit God’s promises for our lives, but it requires our belief in Him, becoming His children and accepting His Lordship to rule and reign over every part of us. We must allow God to have control in what we do, where we go, and how we are to live for Him.

Psalm 119: 44-45 (CSB)

44 I will always obey your instruction, forever and ever.

45 I will walk freely in an open place because I study your precepts.

Our ability to walk freely in an open place, as stated in Psalm 119:45, is solely dependent upon our obedience to God. Our faith in God’s word impacts how we choose to live. The only way that your faith in God grows is through hearing, reading and understanding His word. Therefore, we must be intentional in seeking God for His wisdom, knowledge and understanding. When we remain in pursuit of God’s word, we are able to protect it and hide it in our hearts that we may continuously follow His precepts.

The more that we understand who God is and His desires for our lives, the easier it becomes to submit ourselves to His will and divine direction. We will begin to meditate on His desires and implement His plan in our daily lives, empowering us with the ability to walk freely; honoring God every step of the way.

Genesis 17:1-3

1 When Abram was 99 years of age the Lord appeared to him saying, “I am God Almighty. Live in my presence and be blameless.

2 I will set up my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you greatly.”

3 Then Abram fell facedown and God spoke with him:

After reading Genesis 17: 1-8, I could not help, but reflect on the posture of Abram as God was speaking to him. I noticed that he transitioned out of one posture into the next, and in that moment, God spoke to me that posture matters.

Our ability to hear God is affected by the position that we are in. Sometimes we are in a position where God is speaking, but we can not hear because we are so consumed and too distracted to hear. However, Abram was able to hear God speaking, and in the midst, he changed his posture. The scripture tells us that he fell facedown as God spoke to him. In that moment Abram was focused on one person and that was God. He was intentional in hearing what God had to say so much so he changed his posture. He recognized that who was speaking was not just a man, but God himself. This showed his reverence and honor for God in addition to his anticipation to hear God.

I can not help, but think that if Abram had heard God speaking, but continued on with his day and matters of life, that he would have missed out on hearing God’s instructions and promises for his life. We must ask ourselves, are we anticipating hearing from God, and if so, when He speaks what will our posture be? Will it be one of busyness and still trying to hear (if so, we are sure to miss something that God will speak) or will we prioritize the conversation that God wants to have with us. Will we settle ourselves in a position to hear, free from distraction.

Challenge yourself to cut off the noise, put the devices down, and have intimate time with God. God wants to speak to you; He wants to reveal His plan for your life, provide instructions and remind you of His many promises. The only way to hear is to be still and actively listen (pay close attention). Change your posture and listen to God speak. Be intentional about quieting your atmosphere and clearing your space to make time to hear from God.

Many prayers have been prayed, but the only way to hear the answer is to posture yourself in anticipation that God is going to speak to you!

He Will Leave the “99”

Often, we deem ourselves as ‘very’ special at least once per year on our birthdays and maybe even during other important and significant days; such as our anniversaries, promotions or recognition ceremonies. On all the other days, we may have the mindset of “It’s just another day.”

Luke 15:4 (KJV) What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

Jesus’ parable of the lost sheep clearly displays how ‘very’ special he believes we are in his eyes. Whether the sinner who has not accepted Him into their lives, or the believer that has regressed in their walk with Him; no matter our status, we all represent the ‘one’ in which He has provided the opportunity of Salvation and Restoration.

So, know that you are ‘very’ special everyday, every second and every moment of your life. Heaven has either rejoiced over your Salvation or is waiting to rejoice upon your repentance and acceptance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:9-10

9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Often times, when we lack knowledge of something, we don’t know what to expect. However, when we are enlightened to how something or someone functions, we have a vantage point to be privy to what we did not know before. Knowledge is a powerful thing when recognized and utilized by the right individual. It can bring about good or bring about bad; it all depends on the individual and their perspective of the value of what they have obtained.

So, the question is: What will you do with what you know?

God has provided us with the greatest gift of all, Christ Jesus and His Holy Bible, both being the believers’ vantage point. As a fellow believer, I understand the value of the knowledge in which I have obtained through my belief and time spent with God. I have come to the knowledge of Christ Jesus and the victory He has obtained on my behalf, being a Child of God.

57But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

I now know the schemes of the enemy and the traps in which he desires to catch me in. I now know that with this knowledge and understanding, I can approach people and situations differently. My outlook is not one of defeat, but one of victory. I can encourage myself as I endure and face trials of various kinds. I can reassure myself through God’s word of His faithfulness and goodness toward His people. My hope is not based on the facts that I see and hear, but in the truth that God has declared over my life.

I am a Child of God, I am wanted and loved, I am an overcomer of all things, I am forgiven, I am redeemed, I am wonderfully and beautifully made by my amazing God. Everything attached to me must live and thrive. Everything that I apply my hands to will prosper and succeed as I carry out the work of the Lord for my life.

14I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.

Therefore, the enemy has no reign in my life; no input on how I will function or what I will believe. The trap created will not consume me, but will be shut down by the authoritative word of the Lord that I have and will continue to declare over my family and myself.

So, what will you do with the knowledge that you obtain? Will you choose to live in victory or defeat?

How Do We Experience Prosperity and Success?

(Reference scriptures: Joshua 1:1-8)

In the book of Joshua Chapter 1, we discover that Moses, who was in charge of leading the Israelites to the promised land, had died. The Lord spoke to Joshua, which at the time was Moses’ assistant, instructing him to move into leadership and prepare the people to cross over the Jordan and pursue the promised land.

The Lord encouraged Joshua to be bold and courageous; He told him that everywhere he would place his feet was already given to him. The Lord reassured Joshua that no one would be able to stand against him as long as he lived.

Our ability to prosper and be successful simply comes through our: Obedience, Faith and ability to maintain Sobriety and Vigilance on the Lord’s promises for our life. We see that the Lord had a purposed plan for Joshua to lead the Israelites. He gave him the vision and made it plain, that he may be able to see and understand what he was in pursuit of and why.

The Lord had already taken care of everything for Joshua, but it would require Joshua’s active participation of Faith to experience the Lord’s prosperity and success for his life and the Israelites. The Lord desires to have our active participation as well. He has a wonderful plan and purpose for our lives, but in order for us to obtain it we must be willing to sacrifice our personal motives and feelings. There will always be other options other plans that can form, but we must choose those of the Lord.  So let us all be encouraged to live in Boldness, Courage, Obedience, Faith, Sobriety and Vigilance, that we too may experience the promises of the Lord, living in prosperity and success in all that we do!
