Upon our acceptance of Jesus Christ in our lives and as we grow as Christians, we become aware of the many names of God. Today, we will focus on the name: “Jehovah Shammah”
Knowing Jehovah Shammah: The Lord is There
In Ezekiel chapter 48, the author, Ezekiel, prophesied to the people of Israel about the tribal allotments for the 12 tribes of Israel, that will divide the promised land of their ancestors among them. Prior to this, the prophet Ezekiel spoke to the people of Judah about their rebellion toward God, which resulted in exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar. Also, due to the nation’s disobedience and disregard for God, His Glory and Presence was removed from them.
The judgement of God is real, and the people of Israel felt the effects of their wickedness. However, in the midst of exile, God spoke to Ezekiel to prophesy to the people of Israel, about restoration from their state of rebellion and sin. Along with spiritual restoration, God promised them inheritance of their ancestors promised land. This will occur once the Messiah, Jesus Christ, returns and takes reign of the millennial kingdom on the Davidic throne in the new Jerusalem.
24 For I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries, and will bring you into your own land.
25 I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols.
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
27 I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances.
28 You will live in the land that I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.
Ezekiel 36:24-28
Despite Israel’s wrongdoings and sin, God displayed His mercy and decided that the nation will be restored and brought back into right covenant with Him. He will place them back in their rightful place as the chosen people, not because of who they are but because of His Holy Name and mission to fulfill His purpose in the earth.
23 I will honor the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations—the name you have profaned among them. The nations will know that I am the LORD—this is the declaration of the Lord GOD—when I demonstrate my holiness through you in their sight.
Ezekiel 36:23
The promise stands that the nation of Israel and all those who believe in the Lord our God, will inherit the promised land, the millennial kingdom, in which Jesus Christ will reign for 1000 years. Ezekiel chapter 48 outlines the instruction from God for how the land will be divided according to the 12 tribes of Israel. He also established His rule, reign and order for the inherited land. Most importantly, in verse 35, He let it be known that the name of the city would be “The Lord is There.” (Jehovah Shammah)
Let us take heed to the action of the people of Israel and avoid the consequences and ill effects they faced. We shall turn from wickedness and be restored, living freely as children of God. We have a chance to submit our hearts to the Lord; for those who claim and confess the name of Jesus, but still walk the path of wickedness, repent and ask the Lord for forgiveness and be restored to Him. Those who don’t acknowledge God, seek Him now so you can be showered by His mercy and love leading to a life of righteousness through relationship with Him. God desires to have everyone receive salvation, a life of blessings according to His will and eternal life.
